I was playing around with the idea of using the script as an article directory as well as a shopping directory by pasting articles (with html tags in them ) is there a way to make this work - i just get goobledy gook when trying to import - also it would be handy to be able add html to my data feeds

There is no reason why HTML cannot be incorporated into the text areas of almost any format feed - but the critical thing is that the HTML does not break the feed format, as is quite likely to be the case if they have not been constructed correctly and it sounds like this is what is happening.
Use the demo tool on this website to check that you are using the correct Format String for the feed incase autodetection has failed.
